You are on your way to experience the thrill of kiteboarding!

Here is what we will cover in the first lesson:
Level 1- Ground School: 3 hours of flying the kite, getting to know the gear, reviewing safety and then, when you are ready, we can get in the water. The goal of this level is to understand wind theory, the wind window, and how to launch and land the kite independently.  


At Stoke Riders, we can assure you the most professional kiteboarding training with the local knowledge and top-of-the-line equipment to get you going!

This IKO standard checklist will show you the skill levels you will need to accomplish in Level 1

  • Identify safe wind directions and conditions for kiting
  • Determine the wind direction, up and downwind (windward, leeward).
  • Setting up a trainer kite
  • Knowing how to use the safety systems
  • Carry and handle the kite properly

  • Learning basic flying skills with trainer kite
  • Launching and landing the trainer kite with an assistant
  • Twisting and untwisting the lines while flying the kite
  • Walking and changing directions while flying the kite
  • Identifying and using the wind window
C
  • Setting-up a 4 or 5 line kite with a full de-power system
  • Pre-flight checking of equipment and settings
  • In-flight checking of equipment and settings
  • Pull quick release and activating the kite leash
  • Understanding and using the international communication signals
  • Launching and landing the kite to an assistant and as an assistant - 4 or 5-line de-power kite

  • Controlling the kite hooked into the harness (using two and one hand)
  • Understanding the de-power system and the use of the safety systems.
  • Learning advanced flying skills with the de-power kite
  • Showing full control of de-power systems in flight

  • Self-landing
  • Recovering the bar and kite

 

LEVEL 2 GIFT CARD also includes:

Level 2- Water Training:  We spend the next 3 hours understanding the body dragging positions in the water.  The goal of to be able to body drag upwind, self rescue and relaunch the kite on the water independently. 

Wetsuits
If you are in need of any wetsuit gear, please let me know ahead of time.  We are stocked on cold water wetsuits, boots, gloves, hoods and other kiteboarding accessories. Water temps, even in the Summer, can be pretty cold at times even if the air temperature is warm.  It’ll be best to get you suited up as soon as possible with kiteboarding specific wetsuits.



Level 2 - Intermediate

  • Enter and exit the water independently and safely while controlling the kite
  • Water re-launch the kite
  • Body drag downwind
  • Maintain correct kite position in the wind window
  • Change direction to the left and right while body dragging
  • Self-rescue and full pack-down in deep water

  • Upwind body drag to recover board
  • Upwind body drag holding the board with one hand
  • Enter and exit at the same point while upwind body dragging
H
  • Know the power stroke for a water start
  • Know the safety rules and theory for water start
  • Can put the board on the feet and maintain the correct position for water start

  • Water start in both directions and ride a short distance
  • Come to a controlled stop
  • Understand weather forecast, tidal and wind effects
  • Determine the wind strength, direction and quality
  • Know the right of way rules
  • Know equipment set up and choice according to the weather conditions

 

Level 3- Board Training: In the next 3 hours, you will body drag with the board,  board start and then try to ride longer distances. The goal of Level 3 is to be able to ride upwind.  

At this level you will be stoked and begin to think about buying gear and taking your skills to new heights! You will also be issued an IKO Certification so you can take your kiteboarding skills to other kitespots and be able to rent gear all over the world.
